At this converted Mill, the brief was to create a link between the Main Entrance, which also provided access to the Garage, and a new Office designed to accommodate the owners’ work-from-home requirements. The existing driveway and garden provided a distinctive setting, with the character of the Mill and its established landscape informing the approach to the design. Rather than introducing a standalone structure, the proposal explored ways of creating a natural, simple transition through the garden, using a landscaped Courtyard as the connecting space between home and work. A number of options were considered, each exploring a simple palette of materials and the careful framing of views towards the garden and surrounding landscape. The intention was to create a modest architectural intervention that sat comfortably within the established setting, responding to the character of the converted Mill while gently tying it together.
